Our Story

Crownwell Press was founded on a straightforward conviction: the most important books in the Christian intellectual tradition deserve to be published with the same care and quality that the finest secular publishers bring to their catalogs.

For too long, the works that have shaped the church's theology, devotion, and self-understanding have been available primarily in cheap reprints with poor typography, no editorial apparatus, and bindings that fall apart after a single reading. Meanwhile, the great trade publishers produce beautiful books but have little interest in the theological and historical works that pastors, scholars, and serious lay readers depend on. The result is a gap: the books that matter most are often the worst-produced books on the shelf.

Crownwell Press exists to close that gap.

We began with a backlist of over three hundred titles drawn from the deep well of the public domain: the complete sermons of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the writings of John Calvin and Martin Luther, the sermons of John Wesley, the reference works of R. A. Torrey, and the adventure novels of Ballantyne and Henty, among others. Each of these works is being prepared in a new critical edition with modernized spelling, corrected punctuation, scholarly introductions where appropriate, and interior design that meets the standards of the finest university presses.

Our production philosophy is simple. Hardcover is the flagship format. Every volume is typeset with full justification, hyphenation, widow and orphan control, running heads, and margins calculated for sustained reading. Our paperbacks are perfect-bound with quality paper stock. Our ebooks meet EPUB3 standards with professional CSS and complete metadata. Our audiobooks are mastered to broadcast specifications and distributed globally.

We publish under three imprints. Crownwell Press is our trade nonfiction line, home to theology, church history, commentaries, biographies, and reference works. Crownwell Classics publishes carefully edited reprints of public domain fiction and nonfiction of lasting merit. Crownwell Audio produces spoken-word editions of select catalog titles.

Crownwell Press is based in Colorado and is led by Dr. Peter J. Carter. We are a Christian publishing house. Our editorial decisions are shaped by orthodox Christian conviction, and our catalog reflects the historic faith of the church. We are not a denominational press, but our theological sympathies lie within the Reformed tradition.

Heritage in print. That is our purpose, and our promise.

Our Mission

Crownwell Press publishes enduring works in theology, history, and the humanities that preserve and clarify our intellectual heritage, pairing rigorous editing with elegant, durable production and broad distribution.

What Sets Us Apart

Editorial Integrity

Every text we publish is prepared with meticulous editorial care. Public domain works receive modernized spelling, corrected punctuation, and verified quotations. Original manuscripts undergo substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading by professionals trained in the Chicago Manual of Style. We do not cut corners. We do not rush to market. The text comes first.

Production Excellence

Our benchmark is the production quality of the finest trade publishers. Hardcovers are Smyth sewn with case laminate or cloth-over-board construction. Interiors are typeset in carefully selected serif fonts with full justification, proper hyphenation, and generous margins. Ebooks meet EPUB3 standards. Audiobooks are mastered to professional broadcast specifications. Every format receives the attention it deserves.

Global Distribution

We believe that well-made books should be broadly available. Our titles are distributed through IngramSpark, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Google Play, Kobo, and other major retail and library channels. Audiobooks are available through Apple Books, Google Play, and leading library platforms. Direct sales, including signed editions and limited runs, are available through our website.

Heritage Preservation

The Christian intellectual tradition is one of the richest bodies of thought in human history. Much of it is at risk of being forgotten, not because it has been lost but because it has not been published well. Crownwell Press exists to preserve this heritage by giving classic texts the editorial and material treatment they have always deserved, and by making them available to a new generation of readers.

Leadership

Dr. Peter J. Carter

Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Peter J. Carter is the founder and chief executive officer of Crownwell Press. A scholar, pastor, and publisher, Dr. Carter founded Crownwell Press to address a persistent problem in Christian publishing: the gap between the theological depth of the church's literary inheritance and the production quality of the books that carry it forward.

Dr. Carter's editorial vision for Crownwell Press is shaped by two convictions. First, that the great works of the Christian tradition deserve the same material quality that leading secular publishers bring to their most important titles. Second, that rigorous editing, elegant design, and broad distribution are not luxuries but responsibilities owed to both the authors and the readers of these works.

Under Dr. Carter's leadership, Crownwell Press has assembled a catalog of over three hundred titles, including the complete works of Charles Haddon Spurgeon in eighty-five volumes, the sermons of John Wesley, the writings of John Calvin and Martin Luther, and curated selections of classic fiction and reference works. The press publishes in print, ebook, and audio formats and distributes globally through major retail and library channels.

Dr. Carter also serves as the director of Theology in Focus, an independent Christian ministry. He resides in Colorado.

Statement of Faith

Crownwell Press is a Christian publishing company. Our work is grounded in the historic, orthodox Christian faith as expressed in the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the theological heritage of the Protestant Reformation.

We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the inspired, authoritative, and sufficient Word of God. We believe in the deity and humanity of Jesus Christ, His substitutionary atonement, His bodily resurrection, and His coming return. We believe that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

Our catalog reflects these convictions. We publish works that serve the church, edify the faithful, and preserve the theological inheritance of the Christian tradition for future generations.
